Fanzines

I follow both these fanzines on Instagram so I was delighted to see them in physical stock in the Nottingham contemporary gift shop.

I brought the "Samhain" edition of hellebore as its contains lots of articles about devil folk lore.

I chose the " Ritual" (Summer aisle) edition of weird walk magazine as that's its about the Wicker man film which I found so visually inspiring for my folk project.

I really like the illustration, photography and print styles of these magazines. They are low fi, B movie, feel that suits the cultish vibe of the zines

Front cover, I like the concept of film fanzine. The subject of this magazine is "weird walks"- each edition based in a different English rural location. This edition is based around summer isle the fictional  Scottish island that was the location for  wicker man film.
Gives me the idea to make one around my songs as fanzines are so often related to music and bands too.

This image of one of the film characters in bird mask from ritual magazine. Along with a short paragraph about animal disguise which is so popular in folk rituals and something I plan to include in my project.

From ritual magazine about the summer isle apple's  that were so key to the plot and themes of harvest and sacrifice. Also reference to a sun god.
The colour image is from my own sketch book and lyrics to one of my songs I plan to feature in this project.
at this stage I'm matching up images and words trying to get a feel for how visuals add or change meaning to audio and vice versa in regards to making and choosing visuals to work with my music.

The good and evil colliding in this  B movie style collage image.  Black and white of the historic building and red ominous sky.
It's a bit trashy and I like it a lot.

A feature in the zine - illustration and description of poisonous plants. Lots of folk lore based around these plants especially around witchcraft. thinking about nature and natural medicines, drugs, poisons that inspired so much early folk lore and fairy tales, and how we still use herbs and plant medicines but maybe its becoming a lost art that is still linked to the witch craft.

I think a lot about making zines, little books maybe could make an accompaniment to this project- a collection of lino cuts, I have the idea of making lino cuts from various photographs I've taken of close up details of stone carvings in various churches I've visited recently. also an idea to make a series of images using old books with raised patterns, taking a rubbing and then adding illustration on top as a series of characters... lots of little ideas and loose ends that shoot off from other projects. sometimes distracting but good to remember and come back to.
