Wheat Weaving

Last term I learned a little how to gather natural vines and stalks for weaving and I made cordage with dandelion stalks. This time I'm using wheat, as its very in keeping with Lammas / harvest festivals, thinking about corn dollies and these old crafts that are full of superstation's. thinking about the straw boys of Ireland and the straw bears ,of corn crowns and numerus rural folk costume that utilise this readily available resource.

v
Process of weaving wheat stalks together- the waste from my wheat crown used to make cordage- utilise as much as you can.

Also thinking about contemporary artist using organic materials and craft techniques such as Alice fox.
ive been interested in her work for a while now, she exhibits in fine art spaces as well as teaching and workshopping her finely honed skills. the process of gathering and making from plants is a seasonal one that requires knowledge and patience. its seasonal work that connects to the wheel of the year and gives a deeper appreciation of nature and  of the effort of production.
